THE FUTURE OF BUILDINGS
The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has a strong influence on our daily routines, making it difficult to imagine life beyond it. How will we come together again as a society after a whole year of being apart. And more specifically, how will the future of architecture and design be influenced by COVID-19. Will the trend of keeping distance in design continue or will we switch to a more collaborative and closely connected approach after the pandemic.
Construction
In the past twenty years, the construction industry has experienced big changes. Technology is being made really quickly in all areas of business. Composting is now being used to make building materials. Also, people are starting to prefer environmentally-friendly infrastructure and energy-saving methods. This has made other practices become popular.
During the pandemic, the construction industry has been affected negatively. Many construction sites in different states had to close for extended periods. Most websites have started to reopen now because safety measures are increasing and vaccines are being given. However, this period when the websites were not functioning has been costly for many companies, amounting to thousands of dollars. According to research, the economy is predicted to reach the same level as it was in 2019 by the year 2023, at the soonest. Right now, contractors are gathering and storing important materials for the future (something they can’t normally do). In the future, it seems likely that more construction will happen away from the building site. Being able to create projects in a safe place is really important during a pandemic when we worry a lot about staying safe. Off-site construction is good because it is fast and the quality is good. Site managers can also prevent infections from coming in.
ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN
Every architect wants to design a really amazing building in the future. A creation that will last a very long time and will show how humans have been creative throughout history. As we change what we value and focus on in the future, people have become more accepting of different ways of thinking, especially when it comes to design. Companies in the industry are beginning to change to working from home. Designers and engineers are using digital collaboration tools like building information modeling (BIM) more often. This system uses advanced simulations to help plan projects and make schedules better. Advancements in technology allow for many different and special architectural designs to be created, both in the physical world and in virtual reality. We use computer graphics, wireless tracking technology, and headsets to make things look and feel real. Architects have the ability to design whole cities using 3D virtual technology.
Another idea for the future is the concept of smart cities. Picture a whole city being watched by computers, which can quickly finish small and easy tasks. We can supervise everything like streetlights, trash cans, and road conditions to make things more productive. Using our resources more effectively will help us use less energy and make our society more environmentally friendly.
Sustainability is becoming more popular and we will see it a lot in the coming years. As people become more worried about the environment, our society will do the right things to fix the problems caused by climate change. It’s crucial to use our resources wisely to avoid hurting future generations by using too much of them. To help lessen garbage, the government might create laws to make sure that companies are not unfairly benefiting from resources. Possible solutions to this problem could include finding different ways to build things, using less energy, thinking about the environment when designing things, and constructing taller buildings instead of taking up large areas of land.
Regardless of the solution, humanity will definitely come up with many new and clever ideas that will assist us in moving to the next stage of our society. Architecture helps us build things that will be remembered by future generations. We will think about the people of the future when we create these buildings, especially because of the problems caused by climate change.
