Who exactly will seal my drawings?
You should get a name and a state licence, not a vague assurance. A seal from an engineer licensed elsewhere is not valid for your permit.
Which code edition will you design to?
Code adoption varies by state and often by city. A firm that cannot tell you the governing edition for your address has not checked it.
Is the fee fixed, and what is included?
Ask for a written sheet list with the fee. Open-ended hourly arrangements are where engineering budgets go wrong.
What happens if the reviewer returns comments?
Revisions responding to plan review should be part of the fee. If they are billed separately, you are carrying the risk of an incomplete set.
Will I get the calculations too?
Most reviewers want the supporting calculations. A quote that covers drawings only can mean a second invoice later.
What is the realistic turnaround?
