This is the single most common reason a kitchen remodel needs an engineer, and the single most common reason one gets red-tagged. A wall that looks decorative can be carrying roof load, a floor above, or a point load from a girder truss. Removing it without a designed replacement is not a code technicality — it is the structural system of the house.
